Jan Johnston and Tenishia - Flesh

CLHR099 - July 19th, 2010

If you consider the growth of electronic dance music in the past 20 years, there are fewer vocalists who have been more influential or stood the test of time better than Jan Johnston.

Nine years ago, Jan's vocal talents were at the forefront of every major trance DJ's playlists, thanks to the release of her single "Flesh" - an anthem from Dance Valley, Nature One and the early Global Gathering editions. Now, as a new decade begins, Flesh is about to be given a new lease of life, with a little help from a Maltese duo.

The scene was set for the final night of A State Of Trance's Episode 450 celebrations in Poland, and Markus Schulz wowed the audience with this dark and tough interpretation of Jan's classic. The updated interpretation came courtesy of Tenishia - no strangers to working with Jan in recent years, and their version of Flesh has been a championed staple in Markus' livesets throughout the spring and summer, most notably at Mayday in Dortmund and GDJB World Tour performances in New York, Moscow and London.

Alongside a dub version of Tenishia's original, remix duties for Flesh comes from Toronto's Glenn Morrison, who after hearing Markus play Tenishia's version when together at a live gig in Macedonia, was immediately enticed to work on the track, thanks to his affection for the original from years gone by. The results are quite impressive, with a melodic and upfront version that looks primed to work Ibiza dancefloors this summer.

With almost a century of releases on Coldharbour Recordings, it is somewhat appropriate that we pay homage to a classic from the decade just passed. Flesh is alive and well in 2010.
